The Role

Working in close partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH) of Malawi, Last Mile Health is supporting the government to strengthen community health services, in line with the National Community Health Framework (NCHF) 2023-2030. The Director, Community Health Systems Strengthening, will lead in managing LMH’s community health systems strengthening and community health financing work in Malawi, including the m-mama system (emergency transport system for women and newborns), provision of technical support to the MOH’s integrated Community Health Information System (iCHIS) design, development and implementation and its integration with upskill work to enable community health workers capability to treat patients.
The Director of Community Health Systems Strengthening will also help steward Last Mile Health’s government engagement and will be expected to actively participate in Technical Working Groups at the Ministry of Health. The role will be central to executing LMH’s annual work plan, including playing a lead role in new business development and proposal design.
This position is only open to candidates who are currently located and authorized to work in Malawi. This role is onsite and located in Lilongwe, Malawi.
What You'll Do
Oversight and Coordination of the m-mama system in collaboration with the Ministry of Health (MoH) and Vodafone Foundation
- Provide support to the Senior Manager m-mama through technical oversight across all m-mama program components, ensuring alignment with m-mama objectives, project management, and grants overview.
- Support the Clinical Specialist in undertaking facility assessments and liaising with the Vodafone Foundation team, and ensure timely submission and dissemination of reports to key stakeholders.
- Liaise with the Country Director, Deputy Country Director, and Vodafone Foundation team to understand the political and health system dynamics for implementation risks mitigation, effectiveness, sustainability, and integration of m-mama within the system.
- Participate and contribute in m-mama steering and technical committees and sub-committees as needed.
- In liaison with the Senior Manager, m-mama, and the team document learnings to guide effective scale to other regions of Malawi.
- Track reporting timelines and inputs with the Program Strategy and Performance team
- Liaise with the Vodafone Foundation team in mentorship of the MoH on communication and messaging around m-mama.
Build and sustain the integrated Community Health Information System (iCHIS) and upskill integration to enable remote communities to access care
- Maintain and foster LMH’s partnership with key Ministry Departments, including Community Health Services Section, Digital Health Division, CMED, Reproductive Health Department, and the University of Malawi (UNIMA), and other partners in the development of iCHIS modules and deployment.
- Deepen and mentor staff in iCHIS use at the point of care as a tool for decision support of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in districts where LMH operates.
- Cultivate digital transformation among CHWs, supervisors, and managers to enable continued appreciation of iCHIS and its use.
- Work with the Digital Health Specialist and Senior Technical Coordinator to analyze the training and mentoring needs for CHWs, supervisors, and managers to enable iCHIS use at the point of care and data usage.
- Participate in iCHIS and upskill integration business process development including presenting the work to donors and other potential collaborators.
Collaborate with LMH Program Teams for effective program delivery and quality
- Work with the Health Systems Strengthening (HSS) and Global Monitoring Evaluation and Research (GMERL) team on key program implementation activities .
- Work closely with the MERL Specialist to track progress on indicators, hold internal performance and quality reviews and engage district Ministry teams on quarterly review meetings around program implementation.
- Collaborate with the Manager, Community Health Partnerships & Quality in the preparation of internal quality and performance reviews- including quarterly deep dive meetings.
- Participate in OKR review meetings and ensure updates of the dashboard in each quarter.
- Ensure deepened integration of iCHIS and training work and foster their dependencies
- Partner with the Partnerships & Communications team and the Program Strategy and Performance Team to input and advance proposal and business development
Program management and country level coordination
- Participate in country level coordination meetings and present progress of program implementation
- As Program Area Owner, approve Request for Payment forms and other documentation for the team.
- Attend Budget to actual meetings and work with the Senior Finance Coordinator to ensure a spend analysis is available for team budget tracking and use.
- Participate in Program Strategy & Performance meetings, grant management meetings and other salient meetings with Partnerships and Communications (P&C) as may be deemed appropriate from time to time.
What You'll Bring
- Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s degree in Public Health, Computer Science, Health Informatics, or a related field would be an added advantage)
- Demonstrated experience managing teams (preferably IT-oriented) with experience in project management and staff supervision
- Experience, specifically in digital health, health system design, information systems and upskilling of community health workers
- Experience working with governments with demonstrable success in supporting and advocating with high-level officials and stakeholders in managing policy with a range of stakeholders across sectors.
- Experience designing and implementing Digital Health or ICT4D systems in field settings, such as healthcare information systems (DHIS2, OpenMRS, etc.) and data collection applications (Open Data Kit, CommCare, etc.)
- Strong understanding of Computer Science essentials, with a general understanding of computers, programming logic, and IT system architecture
- Demonstrated success in designing and leading health systems strengthening programs in partnership with the government, and demonstrates knowledge of best practices in global and digital health
- Experience establishing new national-level programs, protocols, and procedures in complex environments, ideally in a community health or global health setting.
- Project management experience in the private or public sector, with increasing levels of responsibility and leadership. Must be able to demonstrate proficiency in workplan and budget management.
You'll Impress Us If You Have:
- Experience working with IT hardware vendors, software engineers, and government IT professionals
- Familiarity with Windows 10 and Android Operating Systems and business analytic skills, including intermediate Excel skills, Microsoft Office, and GSuite, and project management software.
- Strong experience in designing and leading health systems strengthening and digital health programs in partnership with the government, including exploring AI solutions

For Malawi, the range is $58,351- $77,059 USD per annum, depending upon experience doing an equivalent role. Please note that this compensation is subject to statutory taxes.
