The Role

At Last Mile Health (LMH), we are all stewards of our reputation and our resources. If so, you may be the next Senior Finance Manager supporting our Malawi Program.

The Senior Finance Manager will provide financial oversight of accounting, accounts payable/receivable, audit management, and finance operations required for the successful implementation and functioning of Last Mile Health’s Malawi program. They will work closely with LMH’s Global Finance team to ensure availability of funds to implement activities, while also ensuring compliance with both organizational and donor policies and procedures. The Senior Finance Manager will also lead monthly reconciliations, support budget-to-actual analysis, and serve as the primary point of contact for employee inquiries related to finance.

In addition, this role will work collaboratively with both finance and non-finance staff, educating teams on finance and accounting processes and procedures. The Senior Finance Manager will play a pivotal role in ensuring effective financial management, planning, and reporting for work under the Malawi portfolio. 

This position is only open to candidates who are currently located and authorized to work in Malawi. This role is onsite and located in Lilongwe, Malawi.  This position will be hired on a 2-year fixed-term renewable tied to program needs. 

What You’ll Do

Financial Reporting

  • Effective management of all accounts, ledgers in NetSuite reporting system, ensuring compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Performance of an accurate and efficient month-end close. 
  • Manages monthly and other periodic financial and Donor reporting, to ensure that all reports are completed as per the internal process and to the timetable set, carrying out a full review of company accounts to include: balance sheet, profit and loss accounts, and general ledger reconciliation.                     
  • Effectively supports timely and accurate preparation of all donor financial reports in respect to accounting, legal and contractual requirements.
  • Effective management of the cash management process including the preparation of monthly cash forecasts.
  • Supports the Program management team with financial reports including overall and m-mama specific  budget status (budget tracker) and budgets utilization status.
  • Effective management of the statutory audit and funder audit process.
  • Document and maintain complete and accurate supporting information for financial transactions
  • Manage all banking and external audit relationships.

Budgeting

  • Assist in annual budget preparation, analysis, and amendment.
  • Work to ensure budget owners and requestors properly code expenses based on department and grant budgets and provide guidance to improving these processes.
  • Review company’s annual and Donor Budgets to Actual reports monthly.

Compliance

  • Ensure compliance with International Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and regulatory requirements.
  • Provide leadership in the design and adoption of policies, procedures, and controls at Last Mile Health Malawi.
  • Manage filing of registrations, financial reports, tax filings and other filings required by the government.

Management & Leadership

  • Identifies and effectively manages all key in-country risks, especially financial, related to delivering the Country Office programs.
  • Provides a source of verification of budget information in activity requests and requests for procurement.
  • Works with budget managers and county managers to estimate funds requests on a timely basis and supports them to complete their budget revisions based on their spending trends and work-plans.
  • Participate in monthly and quarterly BTA variance review meetings and ensure agreed financial action points are addressed.
  • Manages and motivates Senior Finance Coordinator through recognition; trains, develops, appraises staff, schedules, plans and organizes workload and staff assignments.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance or related field.
  • Progressive years of relevant financial management experience in a corporate or an INGO sector, including experience in operational support including developing strategies.
  • Demonstrated experience working with budgeting, cash management, financial reporting, internal controls, grant management etc.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues in a diversified multi-cultural and multi-ethnic working environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with project management, and a high level of initiative
  • Ability to support and develop teams, fostering a collaborative and high-performance work environment.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to program implementation areas of Malawi for providing field support

You’ll Impress Us If

  • You hold a CPA (equivalent) or Master’s degree in Accounting. 
  • You have audit experience.
  • You have demonstrated experience in managing donor funded projects.
  • You have a strong ability to apply good judgment and decision-making skills in difficult and complex working environments.

The Band for this position: MWI-3

For Malawi, the range is $39,303 - $55,024 USD per annum, depending upon experience doing an equivalent role. Please note that compensation is subject to statutory taxes.
