The Role

At Last Mile Health, we work to deploy a health worker within reach of everyone, everywhere. Do you have experience with providing safe and reliable transportation services, maintaining vehicle logs, and ensuring timely vehicle maintenance? Are you comfortable working flexible hours and supporting day-to-day office operations when needed? If so, then you may be our next Driver in Sierra Leone.

The Driver provides reliable transportation services to LMH staff, prioritizing safety at all times. In addition to ensuring adherence to LMH vehicle policies, the Driver supports general office duties as needed. They maintain regular communication with management and staff regarding vehicle movement, scheduling, maintenance, and repairs.

Flexibility is key in this role, as the Driver may be required to work beyond regular office hours. Working hours may vary depending on operational needs. The Driver is also expected to contribute ideas for improving transportation processes to enhance efficiency and service delivery.

This role is located in Freetown, Sierra Leone, and is only open to Sierra Leonean nationals. 

What You’ll Do

  • Support the implementation of programme activities in Freetown, Kambia, and the districts
  • To provide safe and efficient transportation services for office personnel and goods, ensuring timely and secure travel to designated locations.
  • Always operate the organization vehicle safely and responsibly.
  • Provide courteous and professional service to passengers and represent the organization positively.
  • Coordinate with office staff regarding transportation needs and schedule changes.
  • Always adhere to traffic laws and regulations.
  • Familiarize yourself with assigned routes and locations.
  • Ensure the vehicle is maintained in good condition, perform regular checks, and report any issues promptly.
  • Adhere to designated schedules and timings for pick-ups, drop-offs, and appointments.
  • Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel consumption, and maintenance schedules
  • Adherence to Safety Protocols as mentioned in the guidelines 
  • Ensure vehicles are securely locked when not in use to prevent theft
  • Report any accidents, safety concerns, or incidents involving vehicles immediately to the operations manager by completing the Incident/Near-Miss Report Template 
  • Participate in regular refresher training sessions and stay updated on safety practices and guideline changes.
  • At all times, drivers should carry necessary documentation, including a license, insurance, and registration, while using the vehicle
  • Take responsibility for any fines or penalties incurred due to traffic violations or vehicle misuse.     
  • Perform a basic safety inspection (e.g., Engine oil, coolant, battery, brake fluid, lights, clutch fluid, automatic transmission fluid, power-steering fluid, windscreen-washer fluid, tires, wheel puller, jack, etc.) before each use per the checklist for using the vehicle. 
  • Adhere to all traffic laws and regulations and not limited to the Excerpt of the Road Traffic Act of 2007.    

What You’ll Bring

  • Progressive years of professional driving experience, preferably with an NGO, UN agency, or similar international organization.
  • Proven experience driving 4x4 vehicles and navigating difficult rural and off-road terrain in Sierra Leone.
  • Experience in conducting routine vehicle maintenance and basic mechanical troubleshooting.
  • Demonstrated experience maintaining accurate vehicle logs, including mileage, fuel usage, and servicing schedules.   
  • Excellent driving skills with a clean and valid Class B or C driver’s license (depending on vehicle size).
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English and at least one local language.
  • Good record-keeping skills and ability to maintain detailed vehicle logs and fuel records.

You’ll Impress Us if

  • You can perform minor vehicle repairs and troubleshoot mechanical issues in the field.
  • You have strong interpersonal skills and customer-service orientation when dealing with staff, community members, and partners.
  • You are willing to travel and spend extended periods in remote or hard-to-reach project sites.

The Band for this position: Band 1

For Sierra Leone, the range is $2,140- $4,042 USD per annum, dependent upon experience doing an equivalent role. Please note that this compensation is subject to Sierra Leone taxes. Alongside the published salary range for this position, employees receive both government-mandated benefits (transportation & housing) and LMH benefits (paid time off, child school fee benefit, data/airtime benefits, health insurance, life insurance, and more).
