About the Ethiopia Team

The Ethiopia team works in partnership with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Health to strengthen the country’s flagship Health Extension Program, a globally recognized model for delivering primary healthcare through more than 40,000 Health Extension Workers. Led by Abraham Zerihun, the team works to upskill the Health Extension Workers through blended learning that combines digital and in-person training. It also advances digital innovation through HEP Assist, an AI-powered clinical decision-support tool that helps Health Extension Workers provide evidence-based care at the point of service. The team's portfolio spans maternal, newborn, child health, nutrition, and non-communicable diseases, including hypertension, diabetes, eye care, and stroke prevention and management, while strengthening health systems through sustainable community health financing, resource mapping, and strategic planning to support long-term government leadership and program sustainability. 

The Role

Do you have experience supporting digital health implementation, troubleshooting technology in the field, and working with frontline health workers to deploy and strengthen digital health solutions? If so, you may be the next Digital Health Coordinator at Last Mile Health.

The Digital Health Coordinators will provide high level technical and implementation support for the deployment of LMH's digital health tools to Community Health Workers (CHWs) across Ethiopia, including Extension Essentials and HEP Assist AI. Reporting to the Director, Digital Health, Ethiopia, the Coordinators will support planning, coordination, and implementation of digital health activities, working closely with program teams, field teams, and users to ensure effective adoption and use of digital health solutions.

Based in Addis Ababa, the role will provide hands-on support to digital health implementation and will travel to different regions as needed to support field deployment and training activities. The Coordinators will support workplan management, data collection and feedback processes, data analysis and dashboard development, application installation and troubleshooting, and the development and implementation of processes and procedures that strengthen digital health activities. The role will also provide remote technical support to users through phone, email, and relevant open source digital health communities.

This advertisement is for two Digital Health Coordinator positions based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

This is a fixed-term position for 24–36 months, with the potential for renewal. The role is based onsite in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and is open only to candidates who are currently located in and authorized to work in Ethiopia.

What You'll Do

Digital Health Solutions Implementation Coordination

• Coordinate with the Senior Digital Health Coordinators to ensure that the digital health initiatives are run successfully across all districts
• Work with the Director, Digital Health, Senior Manager of Digital Health, Ethiopia country office program team, the Global DH Manager, and other relevant internal LMH departments (MERL, HSS, etc.) to maintain and update deployment tasks in the implementation plan
• Roll out new Deployment Packages (latest apps and tools such as Extension Essentials and HEP Assist AI) to Health Extension Workers (HEWs)
• Support establishment of a digital health management processes and procedures for digital health activities
• Support Digital Health Training activities including the planning and deployment of a digital education platform for Health Extension Workers
• Coordinate, facilitate and participate in health worker and health systems leaders trainings across districts
• Support learners (health workers, Ministry of Health (MOH) and health system leaders) during training (including app installation on mobile device, etc.) and remotely after training
• Support LMH and MOH program managers/ Coordinators in creating user accounts for app access  and maintain dashboards to track learners sync status and course performance
• Support data collection efforts for all digital health activities including data tracking, data review and date submission support
• Ensure that all users have functioning equipment during training and support immediate troubleshooting of devices during activity deployments
• Support the Director, Digital Health to communicate LMH digital health priorities, and provide training on essential digital health skills to LMH and MoH team members when applicable

Test and Innovate New Solutions for The Ethiopian Health Extension Program (HEP)

• When necessary,  update course content in moodle as requested by the Programs team. This may require quick edits, quality assurance, and publishing of course materials. 
• Quality assurance (particularly) regression testing (testing of new features in new releases) of software before launch
• Feedback provision and gathering on releases (testing releases, post-release)
• Identify and report bugs through LMH’s tracking systems (Jira), and on the Oppia Mobile Community website
• Test new plug-ins, alternative learning platforms, and assess the suitability of different digital health software and hardware for the national HEW program
• Support the Senior Software Engineer to configure learning software and support the integration and migration between systems as requested
• Understand and troubleshoot technical issues in the field and report them to the Senior Digital Health Coordinators and Senior Software Engineer
• Brainstorm and test innovations such as experimental hardware, forms, and digital interventions related to LMH’s digital health platform
• When necessary, participate in field visits to observe digital health team processes (including device management, follow-up data collection, feedback gathering)  and generate ideas for improvement
• Draw on technical skills, critical thinking, problem-solving ability, and creativity to provide the technical edge to LMH’s digital health platform

What You'll Bring

• Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field, such as computer science, Information Technology, software engineering, statistics, mathematics with minimum of  three years of work experience.
• Experience working with data systems including data entry, data quality assurance, and data cleaning, relational databases, dashboard development, and monitoring and evaluation
• Experience with project management, and a high level of initiative
• At least 3 years of relevant experience working on IT-related projects
• At least 3 years of relevant experience designing and implementing Digital Health systems in the field.
• Willingness and ability to travel to remote areas of Ethiopia, sometimes for overnight visits

You'll Impress Us If: 

• You are knowledgeable and experienced with community health systems, especially the Ethiopian Health Extension Workers (HEW) program
• You have the ability to build and edit courses on Moodle LMS
• You have experience with analyzing data and developing dashboards using data analytics and visualization tools like Data Studio
• You have verbal and written communication skills for understanding project requirements and explaining these needs to employees and third-party providers
• You are able to prioritize and manage time to ensure tasks are completed on time

For Ethiopia, the range is an annual gross of $13,094 USD to $24,733 USD, dependent upon experience doing an equivalent role. Please note that compensation is subject to statutory taxes.
